The American Institute of Architects has launched a new initiative to mitigate school violence through school building design.
AIA released a statement Monday spelling out the group's commitment to improving school design. The statement doesn't make any specific policy proposals but rather outlines courses of action the association will take to improve school safety.
"While public discourse on access to firearms and mental health services remains deadlocked, the power of design can improve school safety now," AIA President Carl Elefante said. "AIA is committed to working with stakeholders and officials to make schools safer while building the positive, nurturing, learning environments we all want for our children."
AIA has pledged to lead efforts at all levels of government to update school design guidelines, to support collaborative and continuing education to achieve safe school design, to make safe school design eligible for federal grants, and to pursue federal policy creating a repository of architectural and design resources to be accessed by education professionals and architects.
In addition, AIA is holding a national symposium on safe school design at its Washington, D.C., headquarters on Oct. 19. The event "will bring together a wide variety of perspectives from stakeholders that include law enforcement, educators, mental health advocates and security consultants, as well as architects and other design professionals," according to the association. http://bit.ly/2KK7kv7
